Simon Fisher profile

  • Simon "Billy" Fisher
  • Ageing opener in the classical 'mould' (modelled on 'Sir' Geoffrey Boycott - as a Yorkshireman of a certain vintage I could have no other hero) and generally sniffy about going airborne. Prefer a beautiful looking duck to an ugly 50, which is fortunate now that more of the former than latter come along. Completely run out of places to be hidden in the field though still willing if not effective. The odd catch held belies the general outcome under the aerial ball.

    Paid my dues in the 1990's as club captain (Mike Brearley I was not) and appearances now less than frequent but still hobbling on my dodgy knees from one season to the next.

    Career highlights - best ever bowling, and certain to remain so, of 4 - 8 was in 1982 (and that for Skinners' against Maidstone Grammar - for some reason they thought I was a bowler and I batted 11) and batting of 161* in 1985 against Headcorn (Alan Honess thought I was a batter and batted me at 1 and I didn't bowl - I still wonder who was right).

    I think therefore I can safely say I peaked some time ago and now find the shadows lengthening rather than the sunlit uplands beckoning.
