Southborough Cricket Club News story

In memory - Ken Bones

23 Nov 2017

Following on from the announcement earlier this week of the passing of Ken Bones, his brother Trevor (who also turned out for the Club during the 1980s) has provided the following words:

"Of course he was a member of both Courier Cup winning teams with Southborough and when we won the Invicta League. He was a brilliant close to fielder much of that from his athleticism of being an outstanding goalkeeper. His wicket keeping relied on that instinct but it was his running commentary on a particular batsman or (free coaching lessons as he described them) that summed up his competitive nature. I once scored 127 runs playing against him and the whole innings he maintained most of them were off the edge. But of course in the bar he was the first to buy me a beer and a hand shake which to me was always Ken."

Ken played for Southborough during the 1980s and was part of a successful 1st XI and Sunday sides during that time scoring his first 100 for the Club in 1984 and being awarded player of the year.  After he moved with his wife Joan to Ore he carried on playing cricket for his local side, Icklesham where he topped the Sussex Clubs bowling average with over 100 wickets at an average of 3.8!!  He also played at Lamberhurst, Matfield, Dragons and Linden Park Wednesday team.

His funeral is 27th November at 11.00 am at Hastings Crematorium.
