Message from the Chair

As we approach the final two weekends of the playing season, there is still a lot of cricket to be played and much to play for, with the second team making great efforts to avoid relegation!!

Looking back on the season so far, the first during Covid where we’ve been able to run a full outdoor programme for juniors and seniors, the most abiding memory is possibly the weather!! For the seniors, we have lost four weekends of league games (out of 16 so far) without a ball being bowled and two further weekends have had rain affected games with the games not being completed.  In the junior section, cancelled matches have been re-arranged, with huge thanks to the team managers for ensuring as much cricket could be played as possible.

Variable availability for senior games is another memory we’ll take from this season: clearly the easing of restrictions led to players wanting to spend more time with their families rather than play cricket every week and we had one weekend (end of July), where at least 30 of our adult players were unavailable – that we were still able to field two sides and were competitive in both is real testament to the captains and also the work of the junior section in developing the next group of players who dutifully filled in and acquitted themselves well.  That it was one of the weekends where the matches weren’t completed due to rain was a shame.

As we look towards the end of the season, there is still much to do.  Due to the cancellation earlier this year of our annual Sponsors’ Day, we have now arranged a Community Day which will be held on Sunday 12 September.  There will be a range of games involving our juniors and our sponsors so we’re hoping for a really good turn-out and show of support.  Money raised will help with general club funds to cover running costs and a donation will also be made towards our charity for this year, the Southborough & District Lions, and also to our project to install a defibrillator at the Club.

If you are able to support in any capacity (helping out on the day/donating raffle prizes etc.), please email southborough.c.c@gmail.com and we'll put you in touch with the organisers.

Here’s hoping for a few more weeks of sunshine to allow us to complete our season!!

Community Day 12 September

Really hoping for strong attendance on the day.  We also need volunteers to help on the day, running the bar, flipping burgers, scoring and umpiring and any of the other various tasks.  As is traditional, we will be having a raffle, so even if you can’t make it, please do take some tickets and sell them to friends and family.  If every adult player sold £10 of tickets and every junior sold £5, just on raffle ticket sales alone we would raise £1,000.  Raffle tickets will be up at the pavilion from the middle of next week.  Keep an eye on our social media channels for prizes, but as usual first prize is £100.

Southborough Civic Centre (The Hub) opening – 18 September

Southborough Town Council has organised an event to mark the opening of the Town’s new Civic Centre.  A number of local businesses and organisations have been invited, including us.  It present an opportunity to further get the Club out there in the local community and as well as information on the Club, we are planning on having some kit set up (small net and stump).  Our stall will be by the new football pavilion and will also have information on the history of the Club displayed in one of the new display cabinets in the library of the new building.  As with the Community Day, please come along if possible to support this local community day and if you want to help out on the stand, then please e-mail southborough.c.c@gmail.com.
