Southborough Cricket Club First XI v Old Leightonians on Sat 12 Sep 2020 at 1pm
Southborough Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report The final scheduled match of the season, saw Tom Gillmor bring his old boys team to the Common as part of their tour of Kent. In the lead up, arrangements were made to conclude with a meal on the outfield of Jerk Chicken/Curried Goat and all the trimmings, so all that was left was to play some cricket.

Hassan arrived late, earning him the responsibility of taking on the skippering role, by which time the concept of a timed game had been mooted (and then accepted gratefully by Hass, much to Steve's disgust). OLs had a drop out in the morning, so sportingly, Martyn sent his son into the breach to play as their number 11.

Batting first, Martyn and Phil were kept in check by some very tight bowling. Rumbles was doing the scoring, Snaithy was filming from the roof of the pavilion and the North Bank was starting to fill up. Then Rumbles headed off to the shop to get some supplies and the wheels fell of our innings!! In one over Martyn went after a wide one (having already been dropped off the same bowler by his son), offering a simple catch, followed by Graeme three balls later also departing and then Hass tickled one down the leg side and we were suddenly 24-3 and their bowler ended his over on a hat-trick. Mr Gillmor than graciously made some bowling changes, but that brought more success with James Budd seeing off Chris Holder a few overs later, playing around a straight one. Phil was still there and was joined by the Chairman and ever more generous bowling was offered up so that a game could be made of it. Eventually the Chairman departed after a scratchy innings during which time Phil had taken advantage of the pies on offer, but with the field coming in as he was on 99, he didn't get hold of one and offered up an easy catch. JR and Steve didn't die wondering, trying to hit anything hit-able but both perished a bit sooner than they would have liked and then Snaithy was left batting with Alain with about 20 minutes until tea and the score approaching 200. Snaith was given strict instructions to still be there at the end, even if it meant sacrificing Alain (just to stop him ending with another not out), but unfortunately he slapped one and was also caught.

In reply, one of their openers was looking to punish anything wide or full from the off, whilst the other was more circumspect. They quickly raced to 29 off five but we were able to get the aggressor out, thanks to a well held catch from Mr Holder where he used his hands, elbows, knees and anything else that he could, to cling on to it!! A bowling change brought Steve S on and he wheeled off 11 overs straight, taking 5-32 - well deserved as he bowled with great control and was always dangerous. At the other end, after Adam bowled a very tidy spell of 7 overs, James R came on bowling off spin and between Steve and James, we really tied them up, taking regular wickets including the prized wicket of Tom G, and halting scoring opportunities. As we reached 5:30 and with 20 overs to go, we had them at 103-6. Two more overs between Steve/James saw them at 113-8 and there was the danger that we would have stuffed them and not made a game of it. The skipper then turned to the Chairman to give him a first bowl of the season and 18 runs later, they were suddenly back in the game, but still 60 runs were needed. Batting for them at this stage was young James Budd, on a high after hist first ever stint bowling (in which he also took a wicket!!), he came to the crease knowing he just needed to stay in. That he scored 0 not out from 24 balls in a partnership of 92 was great to see, though perhaps Martyn feels he's now mastered the forward defensive, it might be time to move on to some more scoring shots!!. At the other end, the batsman hit the ball cleanly, rode his luck (dropped twice) but did a sterling job of getting them to the finish line.

In all, 21 players had a bat and 16 players had a bowl. In a game like this, the result is not important and the art of captaincy is tested to contrive to make a game of it and give everyone a game. We didn't quite take it down to the final over, but both skippers and all players played their part in a good natured, fun season ending fixture.

Man of the Match: Steve Smith - brilliant bowling effort.
Wounded soldier: Phil - one away from his first ever century. There will be other opportunities, undoubtedly.
Champagne Moment: Chris Holder's catch from Adam's bowling - never in doubt!!
