Southborough Cricket Club News story

Sunday fixtures start from this weekend (02/06) - please update your availability

27 May 2019

This Sunday we start our Sunday friendly programme of games, against Earlswood Strollers.  They are a nomadic touring team that play friendly cricket in the correct manner which ensures that everyone is involved in the game.

As it stands, our 'everyone' is one person so it's looking unlikely that the fixture will go ahead, which would be a shame.  I would therefore ask that people update their availability in the next day, so that we can make a call on whether we cancel or not.  If you're a senior player that does play and has also played on the Saturday, don't forget your Sunday match fee is reduced to £5.

Why is Sunday cricket important?

Sunday cricket is where a lot of our junior players will cut their teeth in playing adult cricket and it serves a valuable role in this.  As we look to develop juniors at the club and bring them through the age groups, affording them the opportunity of playing adult cricket helps them immeasurably with their development, preparing them effectively for Saturday League cricket.  Also, as a local community club, we are looking to attract playing members of all abilities and all outlooks on team sports.  Some will be looking to participate in more social forms of the game, rather than the competition of league cricket, with Sunday friendlies providing the perfect tonic.  It is therefore of importance that we offer our members a balance of types of playing opportunities.  Finally, with the setting we have, it's always a crying shame when the weather's good and there is no cricket on the Common - it just feels like a missed opportunity!!
